Peace/Pieces

OKAY. In light of my new blog title, and also the new Taylor Swift album, and also the fact that I've been wondering this since I saw my first TV wedding...

Is it PEACE or PIECE?

When the dude is like, about to pronounce two people as man and wife, or man and man, or woman and woman, etc, he always says: Speak now or forever hold your _____.

Now, most people think it's peace because they're idiots who think of dirty things when you say "hold your piece."

It's also because hold your peace has been a way of saying "shut up" since them Biblical times.

But I wonder if it's actually piece. Because what if I have a piece to say? Then I don't say it at the wedding. I'm holding my piece then, and I will be forced to forever hold my piece and not say a bad thing about the sweet sweet union.

And hold your peace just doesn't make any sense. Because if I was at peace with the thing, why would I even have any thing to say? And if I didn't speak, how could I forever hold my peace? I would just be waiting for the day when they broke up, constantly feeling at ease, knowing this wasn't the right fit.

So what do you think? Is it peace or piece? Have you never even considered this? Am I the crazy one for being the only one that even thought it could be anything different? Explain your point in the comments.

xx

  1. I always thought it was peace. Like speak up now or else you have to watch what you say (consequently keeping the peace). But I see your point and now I'm not entirely sure.
